Small Animal Vaccinations

Vaccinations Concerns:

Vaccinations are one area that veterinarians and pediatricians face similar concerns: a misperception that vaccines are somehow harmful. A drop in child vaccination rates have led to resurgence in preventable diseases in children. Although there have been continued improvements in vaccine safety, the perception that vaccines are somehow harmful is growing due to misinformation available on the internet. Reasons that parents and pet owners may not vaccinate their children or pets are the belief that vaccines somehow have long-term negative effects and the diseases they prevent pose little threat. It is because of strong, widespread vaccination programs that previous common diseases are no longer readily visible. As long as 75% of the population is vaccinated, epidemics are prevented. However, in unvaccinated individuals, previously preventable diseases are on the increase. Some pet owners seek additional information regarding vaccinations, but often use the internet rather than questioning their veterinarian. Most internet sites to the public are unduly influenced by reports of vaccination problems, some of which are unsubstantiated. Communication is the key to understanding the benefits versus risks of vaccines and the importance of protecting pets from preventable diseases.
