Vaccinations

Basic Protocol:
  • Eastern and Western Sleeping Sickness with West Nile Virus: twice yearly.
  • Tetanus: at least annually, typically included with Sleeping Sickness vaccine.
  • Flu & Rhino: twice yearly.
  • Strangles: annually
  • Rabies: annually
  • Virus Abortion: given to pregnant mares @ 5, 7 and 9 months of pregnancy.

Our vaccination protocol is based on those recommendations made by the State of North Carolina. These recommendations in turn are made based on the exposure frequency of the specific disease entity. Because of North Carolina’s temperate climate, those diseases carried by vectors such as mosquitos are vaccinated against at least twice yearly. These include the Encephalomyelitis such as Eastern and Western Sleeping Sickness and West Nile Virus. Tetanus is generally included in the “3 in 1” as EWT, i.e., Eastern and Western Sleeping Sickness and Tetanus.

Many diseases we select to vaccinate against are transmitted from horse to horse. These are: Influenza (common name is Flu), Equine Herpes Virus 1&4 (common name is Rhino) and Streptococcus equi (common name is Strangles).
Rabies is a disease transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. We do have cases each year affecting our large animals.
Virus Abortion is a disease with a direct transmission route and is caused by EHV-1.
